CINDYBIN THE "TROLL"

CINDYBIN THE "YAHOO TROLL" STORY

Since this "troll" blog was originally posted 10 years ago, I thought I'd repost it again, because I am STILL getting all kinds of comments all the time where people accuse me of being a "troll". It's just ridiculous. Again, it is the pot smokers and other bullies who accuse me of being a "troll." What does THAT tell you? Just because I have said we shouldn't smoke pot! I don't say anything that any other parent wouldn't say! Yet the pot smokers and other bullies have to accuse me of being a "troll" in order to justify their bad behavior.

Yahoo Trolling Story

The following is an article about Yahoo’s former headline boards, written the end of 2006. I came across this piece one day and found it well-written and accurate, even the part about my role in those forums. I am not sure who wrote it; I believe it is the same person who ran the now defunct Cindybin fansite and forums (which I did NOT take part in). But I wanted to include it here because it does a good job of summing up the whole Yahoo experience I went through, described in more detail in my story “The Cindybin Project: My Adventures of Yahoo and Beyond”. It started out so fun, all the banter and debate on those boards, and ended so horribly, what with the abuse, death threats and threats of bodily harm, people threatening to call their lawyer or the cops on me (because I tried to get them to apologize for hurting me), and other acts of meanness I cannot even go into here. I feel I will never be the same. Not just from Yahoo, but from the lowcarb site as well, also mentioned in my story. I also find it hard to believe that it all happened, that people thought someone like me couldn’t be real, etc. I always felt my values and beliefs were much like anybody else’s. I never thought my posts would cause so much hoopla. I was just trying to be genuine and sincere. In any case, the following article is from 365articles.com, a “high quality article database.” I hope you enjoy it.
THE STORY OF THE BIGGEST TROLLING PHENOMENON THE INTERNET HAS EVER SEENYahoo is the one most visited site in the world. It gets over 240 million visitors each month. And not too long ago, within two clicks from Yahoo’s homepage, you could get into Yahoo’s message boards. And on these message boards, lies some of the most vulgar and disgusting messages you will ever read. Trolling used to be a past time for people who frequent these message boards. What is trolling? Trolling is when a person posts something online that is meant to generate shock or anger readers. Basically, it’s a way to get attention in any way possible, and usually posting something obscene is the best way to do it. Yahoo message boards allowed a reader to “recommend” a message, but trolling became so popular on these boards that vulgar messages would get numerous recommendations from other trolls.
No moderators equals chaos
The difference between a Yahoo message board and other online forums was that there were no moderators on Yahoo. People could post whatever they felt and usually what they felt was something mean or nasty. When the Yahoo message boards came online in the late 90’s, almost all the messages back then were civilized and as related to the subject matter at hand. But users started to realize that there was no one watching over them. They could curse and get away with it. They could insult another person’s beliefs or even their family and there would be no consequences. No moderators and being anonymous meant anything goes. People began going on Yahoo message boards not to discuss a certain story, but to troll the message boards and get a high from pissing off or disgusting others. Some have suggested that Yahoo didn’t moderate their message boards because they wanted to get as much page views as possible to generate ad revenue, while others say that Yahoo had way too many message boards and moderating wouldn’t have done any good.
Trolls competing against each other
Only after a couple of years, nearly half of all messages on Yahoo’s message boards were junk and was troll material written by trolls. This caused a problem for some trolls. Being a troll meant receiving as much attention as possible, but it was hard when you have a whole lot of other trolls competing for the same spotlight. So trolls began getting nastier and wittier with their messages. A troll who had posted a gem would receive several or more recommendations from the trolling community and their message would most likely be copied and pasted by other trolls on other message boards and their post would live on, while a failed attempt to be funny or disgusting would result in zero recommendations and their message would fade to obscurity and never be read again.
The most famous troll of all time
The most famous Yahoo troll of all time was a middle-aged housewife that turned into an accidental troll. She had quite a few hobbies such as making cakes and collecting dolls on eBay. But what turned her into such a celebrity in the trolling community was that she was absolutely against smoking weed and pre-marital sex…and she wasn’t trolling. She actually meant it and those were her true beliefs. Around 2004-2005, Cindybin appeared on the Yahoo message boards and whenever the subject of marijuana or pre-marital sex came up, she was always around to preach what she felt was the right thing, that marijuana was bad and pre-marital sex was wrong. The regulars who frequent Yahoo message boards came to realize that she wasn’t trolling when they saw she put in a lot of effort when arguing against drugs and talked like a person who worked at a rehab center. Now a regular troll would have been for drugs, alcohol and pre-marital sex, but Cindybin was against those very things and this made her the focus of a lot of people on Yahoo’s message boards. Being such an anti-troll has turned Cindybin into one. Other trolls began harassing her or try to become friends with her. Whenever Cindybin posted a message, there would be many replies, turning the whole message board into a discussion about her. Cindybin posted pictures of herself on her profile and on her homepage, thus giving her a face to go along with her messages. Perverted trolls would ask her for sexual favors or comment on how she looked. Cindybin’s fame grew to the point where it spawned many imitators trying to copy her name. Cartoons were made about her and she got her own fansite created by a fan. Eventually around the summer of 2006, the group of trolls called the Dana Crew angered Cindybin so much that she left the boards and has never been seen on Yahoo again. But ask any Yahoo message board reader who the most memorable troll was, and most of them will tell you it’s a woman named Cindybin.
The end of an era
On December 19, 2006, the Yahoo Headline message boards where most Yahoo trolls called home closed down and no one knows when or if they would be up again. The original Yahoo message boards were some of the oldest forums on the Internet, being around for more than eight years. Some former Yahoo trolls migrated over to the Cindybin forums while others went over to Google Groups. The golden age of trolling has most likely come to an end, and there’s a chance we might never see anything like it again.

House Party: Video Game Company Themes of Rape

THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE IS FROM THE "NATION CENTER OF SEXUAL EXPLOITATION":

Videogame Company Leaves Themes of Rape “100% In-Tact”

The online videogame store Steam has come under fire from thousands of individuals for hosting the game House Party, which features animated pornography and manipulation of women into sex through blackmail, intoxication, and deception.
As we learned from the infamous case of Brock Turner, where alcohol was used to assist in the rape of a young woman, it is vitally necessary to combat the rape myths that such activities have no consequences or harms.
After the game was briefly removed for edits, the game has been brought back onto Steam’s online store, and the developers of the House Party videogame have stated that “the entire story of the game is 100 percent in-tact… and there have been no changes made to the content of the game.”
The only edit to the game is that the sex acts have been partially blocked with black bars. Yet there are already several “un-censor patch” add-ons that other developers are promoting so people can remove the black bars and play the game with full pornographic nudity.
This is not a solution.
The entire theme of the House Party game is to normalize and instruct its users as a virtual how-to manual of sex crimes and misogyny.

Tell them that this game needs to be fully removed from Steam’s online store. Ask them to publicly state its policy against pornographic or sexually exploitive content that normalizes rape or violence against women, and to instill consistent enforcement of these policies. This is a problem that needs a top-down solution so that other games like this one are not sold on Steam.

Pot Smoking, Hard-Working Mother Tells Me Off

A lovely woman named Angela writes:

"Tell you what I'm 38 with 4 kids who are all in advanced classes. I smoke I drink hell I smoke pot to and still work and pay my own bills as a single mom.lazy people chose to be that way. So don't judge unless you know. Ignorance is Bliss"

And yet another reason we all need to speak up against pot even MORE.

POT SMOKER COMMENT OF THE DAY: "We use herb."

"We use cannabis, you know? we use herb. Herb is the healing of The nation, like all other qualities is the destruction of mankind, herb is the healing of the nation. The more you accept herb, the more you accept Rastafari. You dig waht i say? we, who accept herb, herb is important, but herb is more important to the people who don't accept it, because that is a reality. I mean, he's not selling them arms, arms selling them something that crave, but you take it in a sense and say... "Herb, Herb is a plant." I mean, herbs are good for everyone... Who call themselves government, and this and that.. Why them say you must not use the herb? You see? And we check that and we just see them just say, "No, you mustn't useit because it makes you REBEL." AGAINST WHAT? Herb is a thing that will give you a little time for yourself so you can live if you use it."

And people wonder why I keep speaking up against pot.

The Doctor Calls...

Advice From a Woman Who Tried Marijuana Once or Twice

WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE

A lovely woman writes:

You need a stiff penis I think. Geez woman. Does anyone get high around you? Try to pressure you into smoking? If not, why the fuck does it bother you so bad? Yes. profanity. Yes, I am a woman. Yes I know, horrible, horrible woman. Never gonna find a husband. Will make a horrible mother. I've tried marijuana like once or twice. It wasn't for me. I am not a fan of it. But do I go around getting on everyone's nuts about smoking it? No. You give Christians a horrible name. You are just turning people away instead of inviting them in.

AARGGHHH! As I've said a billion times, it is comments like this that make me realize why we all need to speak up against pot even MORE! I never even THOUGHT about pot before we got the Internet and I started hearing from people like this. I never smoked pot, I've never even SEEN marijuana! This all started years ago on Yahoo where I went to post about lowcarb diets! I made one innocent comment on a marijuana story there about how we shouldn't use drugs and that you can get into trouble with the law, and thought that would be the end of it! But all heck broke loose, with pot smokers cussing me out, threatening me with death and bodily harm, attacking my religion, making fun of me for collecting dolls, and of course they ALL accused me of thinking that pot is dangerous and addictive and kills people, they all accused me of drinking wine and never saying anything bad about alcohol, they all told me about the MEDICAL benefits as if that makes it okay to get high recreationally, they all told me that if I haven't TRIED pot, I can't possibly speak up against it, etc. etc. etc. I spent months honestly and sincerely explaining myself to those people, even writing a BOOK. Yet I still hear the same things over and over!

Your comment proves why we all need to speak up even more about pot and why it should be illegal forever, with VERY STIFF PENALTIES. It is not because of marijuana itself, but because of the people who use and defend it! Like YOU! You may not USE marijuana anymore, but LOOK at you! Instead of being a nice, decent person and taking a stand AGAINST drugs and defending me against all the bullies who think nothing is wrong with smoking pot, you tell me that I need a "stiff penis" and you cuss, and you accuse me of thinking that you'll never get a man and be a horrible  mother. When I say things like, "What type of guy is a young lady going to attract if she uses bad language", I am NOT saying that you will NEVER GET A MAN! Yet you women always accuse me of that. I am saying that yes of course you may find a man, but think of the TYPE of man you would attract if you casually use such language. Can't you see my point? Don't you want to marry a NICE guy? Do you think that a truly nice guy is going to want to date or marry a woman who blurts out the f-word like it's nothing??

And then you ask if anyone gets high around me or has tried to pressure me into smoking. UGH. Haven't you read a thing I have written? I wrote a whole BOOK about all this which has been online since 2006, and I've explained countless times that nobody ever offered me pot or talked about it to me or anything! I've never even SEEN marijuana! I never even THINK about marijuana! And you shouldn't, either! That's why I was so shocked when we got the Internet years ago and all these pot smokers attacked me right and left and accused me of all this wrong stuff. They all honestly think that if only I knew how SAFE "weed" is, I'd realize it's okay to light up a joint, smoke it and get high. They honestly think that I am against pot because I think it's all dangerous and addictive and kills people! I must hear "Weed hasn't killed anybody" 50,000 times a month! And they all tell me to TRY marijuana, as if that will get me to see the light and realize how "fun" it is to get high.

And then you say you TRIED marijuana once or twice?? Now see, this is exactly what I've been talking about for years, about how all the casual users, by their sheer numbers, keep the whole illegal drug trade in business and all the crime and violence by the cartels. Don't you read the news? People like you who TRIED marijuana once or twice are the ones who keep these cartels in business. All the crime and violence trickles down and affects us ALL. But do you care? No. All these people who TRIED marijuana or only smoke "occasionally" are the ones who we need to really scold! People have been saying this for years online, about how it's the CASUAL users and the ones who have only TRIED marijuana that are the ones to blame for the drug war! Yet pot smokers and other bullies accuse people like ME for the drug war. Oh brother. Just because I have said we shouldn't smoke pot. So where did you even FIND marijuana? Who are you that you're above the law? Nobody ever offered me pot! And I wasn't some big anti-drug activist, either. I wanted to be cool and not be considered a goody goody. But using illegal drugs was the farthest thing from my mind! You had to be a totally different person to do such a thing! That's why I am so shocked that YOU would have tried them! Especially if you claim to be such a good person!

And stop blaming my religion on my stance on drugs! I am so sick of this! Whenever people find out I'm Mormon, they say, "Oh, you're MORMON. THAT explains it!" I have said over and over that I wasn't even religious in high school or college and I never smoked pot. Nobody ever offered it to me or anything. And I was a teen in the 70s! Same for my husband! And we sure don't know anybody NOW who smokes pot, approves of it or knows where to find it, religious or not! Yes, I have religious beliefs now, and I am a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where we are taught why it's wrong to use mind-altering drugs like pot and alcohol. Using drugs to have "fun" is not what TRUE fun is. And when I bring this up, I think people will be touched and want to learn more, but they use it AGAINST me. It's so frustrating! Again, I am trying to HELP you when I share  my religion and how Heavenly Father doesn't want us using mind-altering drugs recreationally. But as I've said a billion times, you shouldn't even have to be religious to know not to smoke pot or drink alcohol. It's just common sense! My point is that a grown adult should be well past the age where they'd want to use a mind-altering drug to get high, stoned, buzzed, relax, have "fun", enjoy life, celebrate, socialize, etc. Can't you understand this?

So yes, comments like yours are the entire reason I realize we all need to speak up even MORE against pot. Telling me I need a "stiff penis". Oh brother. And then you ask me if anyone gets high around me or pressures me into smoking pot. As if THAT is the reason I'd have the AUDACITY to say we shouldn't use drugs. Again, I NEVER EVEN THINK ABOUT POT. And you shouldn't, either! But it is because of comments like yours that I continue to speak up even MORE against pot, because you people always accuse me of being "obsessed" with pot or needing a stiff penis or having some deep, dark reason for being "against drugs". THAT IS RIDICULOUS!
