ILLYA KURYAKIN THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. VIDEOS
I had a dream last night about Illya Kuryakin, my old crush from the Man From U.N.C.L.E. show of the 60's. It's hard to remember, but I think we were married or somehow romantically attached, and he came home from an assignment and gave me a cool classified magazine that had secret instructions to get to U.N.C.L.E. Headquarters. I was so impressed! Then he went off to take care of some other business, but I was anxiously awaiting his return that evening so I could hug and cuddle him. Pretty racey, I know.
Anyway, that got me to thinking about a blog I wrote a few years ago about David McCallum's role as Illya. So I thought I'd re-post it here:
CINDYBIN’S VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK: THE ILLYA KURYAKIN AFFAIR
I shouldn’t do anything to promote YouTube but I still have a bunch of videos I want to recommend. So this week we return to the world of spies, with links to clips from The Man From U.N.C.L.E., one of my favorite shows as a youth in the 60’s. Show co-star David McCallum was my first crush as a young girl—even before the Monkees. He played U.N.C.L.E. agent Illya Kuryakin, along with Robert Vaughn as fellow agent Napoleon Solo. Vaughn was supposed to be the James Bond-type star of the show, with Illya’s character not really in the limelight at first. But the two made such a captivating pair that Illya was soon bumped up to equal partner. It didn’t hurt that he made all the girls swoon with his cute long hair, which was quite daring at the time. In fact, he was sometimes referred to as “the blond Beatle”. McCallum was British in real life but played a Russian on the show, which explains his accent.
Each episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. had a title with the word “Affair” in it, i.e. “The Vulcan Affair”, “The Never-Never Affair”, etc., which is why you will often see titles of YouTube videos worded the same way, such as the one below. I even saw one called “The YouTube Affair”.
McCallum has been on NCIS for several years as medical examiner “Ducky” Mallard. I have enjoyed this show, especially McCallum’s parts. (I also like Abby!) There are videos of Ducky on YouTube if you want to see what he looks like now, if you haven’t seen him already. For a man in his 70’s, I think he still looks pretty good and brings a lot to his role.
I hope you check out the following links. Sit back, grab a few cacao nibs, and enjoy!
THE MAN FROM UNCLE TRAILER: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQyJnAs7BlU
Good black and white footage from first season in 1964, Napoleon and Illya entering secret U.N.C.L.E. headquarters through the tailor shop, etc.
ILLYA KURYAKIN: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5_48RQha9U
Takeoff on Austin Powers with music from that movie. Nice mix of color and black and white shots.
MAN FROM UNCLE—THE RUSSIAN ANGEL AFFAIR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkdEyK5LieQ
Entertaining footage of McCallum, opening with short clip from NCIS where characters talk about what Ducky looked like when he was younger: “Illya Kuryakin”. Of course most of the cast on that show was not around when U.N.C.L.E. was on, so unless they’ve seen reruns they can’t appreciate what a legend McCallum was.
